Abstract
This essay explores changes in the extended family structure in relation to migration to Taichung city. Speare found that the extended family is still valued, that both rural and urban men had lived in extended families, that economic opportunity was the most compelling reason to move to the city, that the probability of moving to the city increased with the number of brothers a man had, and that although moving to the city tended to break up extended families, the ties were maintained in various ways. The sample included a small number of Hakka-speaking men.
