You can browse the list of all documents in eHRAF World Cultures by clicking on the Browse Documents tab at the top of the eHRAF interface, or by expanding the sidebar menu by clicking on the menu hamburger button in the top left and then clicking the Documents button in the sidebar.
Combined with easy citations using the format_quote Cite button that is available throughout the database (including on each Publication Information page and on search results pages), Browse Documents can help you to keep track of ethnographic sources within the eHRAF databases.
How to Browse Documents
At the top of the page, you will find a search bar. Use the Search Document List bar to filter the list of documents. Begin typing a document or author name into the box to see suggestions.
Use the controls at the top right of the document list to sort, filter, or change the way the document list appears on the screen.
Click the Show Filters button to open the filters sidebar on the left. There are eight filter types you can select from:
Subsistence Types: the subsistence strategy of the culture represented in the document
Regions: the area the document pertains to
Published Date: the decade the document was originally published
Culture Level Samples: cultures in eHRAF that match a particular sample. See Samples for more details
Document Level Samples: documents in eHRAF that match a particular sample. See Samples for more details
Series: documents that are part of a series
Author: the top ten authors for the current result. This list will update if other filters or a search is active.
Document Types: the format of the document. Possible values are book, article, essay, and book chapter.
Each filter has a number next to it showing how many documents will appear with that filter. This number will change if you have performed a search or have already selected other filters. Note that every world region has more specific subregions within that region you can also select from.
There are two possible ways to view the document list: list view or card view. List view is the default. The View As button allows you to switch between these two views. Both views display the same amount of information, so feel free to select the view that suits your needs.
You can sort the list of documents alphabetically by author name, alphabetically by culture, alphabetically by title, by publication date, and by relevance to the search query. Relevance is the default, but if no search query is entered, all documents will be listed alphabetically by author name. You can also select whether to sort Ascending or Descending.
If you sort documents alphabetically by author name, culture, or title, you can click
Browse By on the top left above the list. This will open a dropdown of each letter of the alphabet. Select a letter to only see author names, cultures, or titles that start with that letter.
Click on a document name to expand a brief overview. Beneath the document name are several details about the document, including abstract, authors, region, subsistence type, and coverage date. On the right in the overview are the OWC culture described by the document and the OCM subjects applied to the document. Click on Full Context to view the document.
