The Karakalpak Republic makes up the eastern third of Uzbekistan. Karakalpaks are Hanafite Sunni Muslims and speak a Central Turkic language in the Altaic language family. The Karakalpaks are a minority in their own republic. Irrigation agriculture, mostly practiced on state controlled land and collectives, provide the main source of income.
