Abstract
This study, in Spanish, describes several aspects of the ethnography of the Shipibo living in the Rio Ucayali area of Peru. Much of the ethnographic focus is on the towns of Yarinacocha and Roboya and on the ceremonies associated with the girl's puberty rites in preparation for marriage. In the context of the puberty rites, Karsten presents detailed information on female circumcision practices. Additional data include descriptions of marriage customs, food restrictions, the use of medicines, alcohol, and narcotics, animal and plant spirits, childbirth, shamanism and sorcery, magical protective ceremonies, and death.
