Abstract
This article covers several aspects of the ethnography of the Easter Islanders following over two hundred years of contact with Western civilization. While the author, a professional archaeologist, gives a rather brief and general account of the history of relations between Easter Islanders and Euro-Americans, he gives well-rounded descriptions of the effects of culture contact upon the indigenous population as reflected in contemporary customs relating to birth, adolescence, courting, sexual morality, marriage, divorce and death. Of special note are data regarding the position of the first born son and his relationship to his father, and the position of authority of the parents-in-law to a married couple. The article concludes with a summary of changes in social organization.
