Abstract
This chapter from the 'Studies in a Hawaiian Community' (see documents nos. 7, 17-21, 23-27) focuses on the marital bond. The male adolescent pattern of minimal responsibility and task avoidance continues in early marriage until the first children come. Then, under growing pressure from his wife, the husband recognizes the necessity of providing for his family. His focus gradually shifts from friends to the home. Marriages that do not make these adjustments end in divorce, marriages that do tend to last.
