Tongan kin groups: the noble and the common view

journal of the Polynesian Society83 • Published In 1974 • Pages: 5-13

By: Dector Korn, Shulamit Rose.

Abstract
This article includes not only a discussion of various kin groups among the Tongans, but also a critique of other works on Tongan social organization. The kin groups discussed are the HA'A, 'API, KāINGA, and FAMILI. The differences and similarities in the membership, functioning, and social purposes of these groups are explained. The author takes pains to point out that the study of Tongan kin groups must take into consideration different behaviors between social classes, something that has been neglected in much of the literature on Tongan social organization.
