Abstract
This article contains information from the Russian explorer's diary, which was published in a Russian geographical journal in 1877, supplemented by other data added by an anonymous editor. Information is given on Yapese physical characteristics, mutilation and tattooing; leadership and social classes; buildings and construction; traditional stories; money; and the influence of European traders on Yapese culture. The data are interesting in view of their relatively early date.
