Drinking patterns of the Mescalero Apache

Quarterly journal of studies on alcohol28 • Published In 1967 • Pages: 116-131

By: Curley, Richard T..

Abstract
This source contains a normative view of Mescalero Apache drinking patterns, including information on typical drinking settings, typical drinking style, the relationship between drinking and social role types, and the formation of drinking groups. It is the author's contention that Apache drinking may be viewed as a patterned cultural behavior that functions '...as a substitute for the various forms of institutionalized activity and group relationships that have been lost to the Apache during a hundred years of deculturation'. On the whole, the article appears to be impressionistic and superficial.
