Abstract
The author explains the rise of the anti-Mormon movement in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, arising from popular fear of autonomous, secretive groups such as the Masons, Catholic Church and Mormons in an age shaped by Jacksonian ideals of individual liberty and republicanism.
