The character and history of the Southern Ute peyote rite

American anthropologist, n.s.42 • Published In 1940 • Pages: 463-478

By: Opler, Marvin Kaufmann.

Abstract
A comparison-contrast of peyotism among the Southern Ute of Towaoc and Ignacio is the subject of this article. The data appear to have been gathered mainly through interviews. Included are information on the rites and the attitudes towards peyotism. Opler argues that peyotism has become an important integrating mechanism among the Towaoc Ute whereas it has never been widely adopted by the Ute of Ignacio. He traces this differential adoption to their different histories of contacts with Anglo society.
