Navaho basketry as made by Ute and Paiute

American anthropologist, n.s.40 • Published In 1938 • Pages: 758-759

By: Stewart, Omer C. (Omer Call).

Abstract
The author, an ethnologist who did field work among the Utes and Paiutes, takes issue with Harry Tschopik, Jr.'s remark in source 91: Tschopik , that baskets made by the Paiute and Ute for use in Navajo ceremonies 'are made according to Navajo ritual requirements.' He points out that the same factors that cause obsolescence among the Navajo cause new growth among the Ute and the Paiute, who now have adopted an alien type of basket and turned its manufacture into a flourishing industry.
