It explores such subjects as social conditions for Blacks in the 1890's, the migration of Blacks to New York from 1890-1914, early social reform movements, the history of Harlem, the movement of Blacks into Harlem, the emergence of Harlem as a slum, social service agencies working in Harlem, Harlem politics, and the Negro as a symbol of the Jazz Age.
