Abstract
At the end of World War II a massive immigration of Italians took place which made them Canada's fourth largest ethnic group. This major period of immigration coincides with significant changes in regard to immigration and assimilation policies. Since the early 1970s, however, Italian immigration to Canada virtually has ceased. This monograph begins with a theoretical discussion of policies that apply to all groups in a multi-ethnic society, followed by a history of Italians in Canada up to the early 1970s when the delcine in immigraion coincided with the enactment of the above mentioned policy changes. Jansen then describes the regional, social, and cultural origins of Canada's Italian population, and the salient features of the actual immigration process, with particular emphasis on various aspects of assimilation. Following a discussion of areas of concern to Italians, the book concludes with an attempt to define 'Italians in a Multicultural Canada' (pp. 1-2).
