Abstract
In this report on changes in women's education from the Pahlavi regime and the Islamic Republic. The authors note that little has changed in the formal structure and content of education for men and women. However the percentage of females in school and female literacy rates has steadily increased under the Islamic Republic, although women have not made as much gains in less developed provinces. Literacy rates for women have doubled in rural areas, although they are still half the rate found in urban areas. The country-wide structure of sex-segregated schools is being relaxed beginning in rural elementary schools. Access to higher education has increased for women in absolute terms, but some fields are restricted to women. The authors also look at changes in textbooks. While the content of text has changed little, they note an invisibility of women in illustrations and an increase in Islamic dress.
