Icons and militants: mothering in the danger zone

Abstract
Mothers are icons of nations and motherhood is often invoked in nation building and national struggles. Peteet examines this metaphor in the context of the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1991) and the Intifada (1987-1993). In both cases the idea of 'maternal sacrifice' and 'mothers of martyrs' became powerful symbols of resistance, although, according to Peteet, it did not translate into gender equality. She discusses how women used their wartime status as mothers to claim more recognition and rights for women within the resistance.
