The Relacion de Tlacolula y Mitla

Mesoamerican notes4 • Published In 1955 • Pages: 13-24

By: Horcasitas, Fernando, George, Richard.

Abstract
This document contains the translations of the relaciones written in 1580 for the towns of Mitla and Tlacolula. The relaciones are thumbnail sketches of the communities, covering a wide range of topics including geography, history, redocuments, and customs. Topical coverage is, however, superficial. Relaciones were prepared by Spanish officials throughout New Spain in response to a questionnaire sent by the Crown. Information for Mitla and Tlacolula was gathered by interviewing Zapotec leaders in these towns. The relaciones are of interest in that they give some picture, albeit sketchy, of these towns in the early colonial period and they may be compared with relaciones from other parts of Mexico for the same time period.
