Abstract
This study of agriculture, land use, and irrigation in the Valley of Oaxaca is based primarily on mapping and field surveys carried out between 1966 and 1970. The study begins with a description of the climate and geology of the Valley as a prelude to subsequent chapters which deal with agricultural practices and productivity and water use. Information on present-day population and land use is then used to contruct models for historical reconstruction and these models are compared with archaeological data. The main findings of this study are: 1) water is the most important determinant of agricultural productivity in the Valley; and 2) peasant agriculturalists in the Valley underutilize their land redocuments because, Kirby argues, they are satisfying cultural and economic goals rather than simply economic goals.
