Abstract
This article examines some of the aspects of work in the social construction of gender in two Icelandic fishing villages which the author studied during her fieldwork in 1989-1990. Skaptadóttir describes women's central position in the household, on the one hand, and their work in the freezing plant processing fish, on the other. In addition to the gender related focus on the division of labor in Icelandic society, with particular emphasis on the marine fishing industry, this paper also contains information on the construction of gender and the maintenance of gender inequalities in the sphere of production, and on those jobs that are considered appropriate for men and women in the society.
