Abstract
By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Yukaghir (Yukagir) had significantly declined both demographically and culturally. While underscoring this broad pattern, this study observes continuities in core cultural values and ethical concerns among remnant populations, including those who no longer speak the Yukaghir language or practice nomadic hunting and fishing. The most important evidence for such continuity comes from close observation of the role of mythology and related folklore among the Upper Kolyma Yukaghir.
