Abstract
The author explains the method and utensils used by the Yakut in the production of kumiss, a strong alcoholic drink made from fermented mares' milk. In his descriptions of the two kumiss festivals celebrated by the Yakut he explains the significance of the rites, and the place of the horse in Yakut economic and religious life. Excellent photographs showing the kumiss churns, ladles, and drinking goblets are also included.
