Abstract
This is an important paper concerning the ethnic and social history, ethnic relations, tribal composition, and contemporary social organization of the Enets, one of the Samoyed “tribal” groups. The author attempts to trace the origins, territorial distribution, migrations, and fusion and fission of various named social groups. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to determine what type of social unit is being discussed. For the contemporary Enets, the lineage and sib organization is described in some detail, including marriage patterns, social and population composition, ownership of reindeer, derivation and meanings of kin group names, and so forth.
