The Siberut Project

Abstract
After a brief summary of the ethnography of the Sakuddei (Sakkudei) who live in the interior of Siberut Island in the Mentawei Archipelago, the author describes the various external influences which are having a profound affect on the life of the people (e.g., commercial logging operations). As a counter measure to these outside influences, and with the support of the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Survival International Siberut Project (of which Schefold is a project director) has proposed a series of measures to preserve the natural environment of the area occupied by the Sakuddei, and, where possible, their traditional culture as well. The last part of this article describes the policies and goals of this organization.
