Abstract
This article, written by a Spanish missionary who lived with the Ifugao of Quiangan (Kiangan) from 1868 to 1897, briefly describes the various aspects of Ifugao culture, including the settlement system, subsistence, technology, exchange, social organization, education of the young, marriage, and social sanctions. Limited data on material culture appear throughout the text. Data on religious and secular ceremonies associated with burial, placation of ancestors and gods, warfare, head-hunting, and display of rank and wealth are presented from a highly critical point of view. In the addendum, written by Lt. L. E. Case of the Philippine Constabulary who lived in Ifugao country for 4 years, the full text of a head-hunting origin myth appears. Throughout the text, the translator corrects Villaverde's interpretations. Captions for the photographs appear on pp. 261-262. The Spanish text was originally published in 1879.
