Abstract
This is new introduction to the second Indian impression of Fruzzetti's 'Gift of a Virgin' (see document no. 23). She discusses how the commoditization of Indian society has impacted negatively on women's rights and status, in the most extreme circumstances leading to dowry deaths, in which brides are brutalized in an effort to exact higher dowry payments.
