Abstract
This study is based on interviews with 125 women of different castes and communities (excluding Muslims) in the town of Krishnagar. It investigates the attitudes of women toward male-female relations in Bengali society, with a focus on four main issues which the author considers as indices of modernity: (1) the free-mixing of males and females in social situations; (2) self-choice of one's marriage partner; (3) inter-caste marriages; and (4) divorce (p. 121). Each of the above issues is discussed in the text taking into consideration the differences imposed on the data by the caste, class, age, and educational levels of the informants presenting the information.
