Abstract
This is a study of political processes in the Bangladesh village of Badarpur (a pseudonym) prior to the independence of the country in 1971. The author analyzes the processes of change in the village and the manner in which these processes relate to the wider community outside of the village and the nation as a whole. In addition, national ideologies are discussed in the context of how they are reflected in the political behavior of the Badarpur villagers. More concretely this source shows '…how and why political loyalties in the village vary from one situation to another, and the effect of governmental or nation directed policy on the local polity' (p. 3). Although this work focuses on political behavior, there is also much information here on socio-cultural history, land tenure, economy, religion, marriage, and social organization.
