Abstract
This source is a study of the social and economic changes experienced by people of the Nadar (Shanar, Shanan) caste over the past 150 years. The author focuses on the available avenues of caste mobility in Tamilnad, and discusses attempts by the Nadars at 'social uplift' and how they have affected the solidarity and internal structure of the caste over time. He then examines the degree of involvement and interest of caste members in the political life of South India, and presents five life histories of individual Nadars at the end of the source to highlight Nadar sentiments concerning politics and caste.
