Abstract
The author of this popularly written account of Tibetan culture was, for fifteen years, British Trade Agent in Tibet. During that time he became a friend of the Dalai Lama and a sympathetic observer of the culture of the people among whom he was living. Primarily descriptive, the book is organized along the principles of a standard ethnography. There are chapters on geography, history, government, religion, commerce, agriculture, social organization, magic, medicine and so forth. It is especially valuable for the description of the religious life and its relationship to the rest of the culture.
