By: Lamley, Harry Jerome.

Abstract
This essay, based on a wealth of historical data concerning both Taiwan and its mainland sources of immigration during Ch'ing rule (1684-1895), surveys what Lamley describes as 'subethnic' rivalries and competition between the island's different groups. The term 'Hoklo' is used almost exclusively throughout the source to refer to the Hokkien-speaking population.
