Abstract

This essay examines the nature and extent of migration by inhabitants of four primarily agricultural villages in Chang-hua county to the city of Taipei. The Gallins begin by characterizing the migrants with respect to a number of socioeconomic variables, such as educational level, marital status, and occupation. Then consideration is given to the economic and sociopolitical relations of the migrants in the new urban situation and the ways in which their networks of relationships, especially those based on kinship, village, and occupational ties, affect their integration into Taipei life.
