The cultural bases of factional alignment and division in a rural Taiwanese township

Abstract

This article is concerned with factional divisions and the political organization of 'Matsu', a township described by Jacobs as relatively homogeneous in population. Various bases of political alignment are discussed, such as sodalities among co-workers, former classmates, and affines. Data are presented relating to the township's commercial and administrative hierarchies, as well as the tendency of marketing communities toward endogamy.
