Problems of descent in the southern Ryukyus (Sakeshima)

Abstract
In this short article, Newell compares three different descent systems: the Okinawa MUNCHU and UJI systems and the Japanese IE system. He argues that they are distinct and incompatible systems. The MUNCHU patrilineal system is the system of Okinawan nobility, which was superimposed on the commoner, bilateral and household-oriented UJI system. The UJI system is fast disappearing, because the MUNCHU system can better accommodate the vertical and horizontal mobility that has occurred especially sinceWorld War Two.
