Abstract
This is a captain's journal of a British Embassy to China, which included visits to Java, Korea, and the 'Great Loo-Choo Islands' (Ryukyus). While the British Ambassador was waiting in Canton for a response from the Imperial Court, Captains Maxwell and Hall carried out nautical investigations in the Yellow and East China Seas. They spent several weeks on Okinawa and this is the fascinating account of that visit. Because there was no real political motive in the visit, both sides exhibited a sensitivity and courtesy that was truly remarkable for the times. However, the Ryukyuns tried their utmost to keep the British off the island, perhaps out of fear that they might discover their ambiguous political status: overtly a tributary state of China, but covertly a vassal state of Japan.
