This is a six-month study of Dogon social organization and
production in the village of Sibi-Sibi, five kilometers from the town of Bandiagara. In the
first part Bouju discusses Dogon (Karambé clan) social struture: the clan, lineages,
affinal relations, age-grades and village organization. Next he discusses land tenure,
cereal production, and redistribution of family produce and income, and shows how they are
embedded in and reinforce the kinship and age-class system. In the last section Bouju
discusses market gardening, migrant labor, and Islam and the affect they have had on
traditional Dogon social structure.
