This work, written by a well-known French ethnologist,
presents a detailed study of the toys, dances, games and other amusements of the Dogon
children living in the area of the escarpment of Bandiagara in French Sudan. The data for
this study were collected by the author in the course of the Dakar-Djibouti and
Sahara-Sudan expeditions in the years 1931 and 1935. Griaule notes that in many of the
listed games and amusements there are certain religious and magical elements present,
basically parodies of adult rituals, which may eventually represent the only survival of
those adult Dogon ceremonies now falling into disuse (p. 4).
