Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This ethnography opens with a critical review of the
historical literature on the Karajá. Next, the three "tribal" subgroups are
distinguished (the Karajá proper, the Javahé (Šavajé), and the Shambioá (Šambioá),
indicating for each their nomenclature, location, and distribution. The Karajá proper
are subdivided into North and South hordes, manifesting a degree of cultural difference.
Regarding social organization, information is presented on the role of village chiefs,
legal norms and sanctions, status distinctions, forms of greeting, and inter-tribal
relations involving trade, warfare, and the treatment of captives. A highlight is the
pattern of inter-village relations in which a visit must commence with a wrestling match
between the men of the two villages. Some aspects of the life cycle are also covered,
including marriage, sex, family relations, pregnancy and birth, the care, activities and
status of children, and death and burial. Additional data are given on population,
settlement patterns and settlement plans, the subsistence economy and food patterns,
trade and exchange transactions, division of labor, technology and crafts, magic,
sorcery, magical therapy, folk medicine and morbidity, and Karajá knowledge and opinions
of a number of surrounding tribes.
