Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document André Thevet visited Brazil in 1555 with the exception of Villegaignon. He gathered, during his short stay at the bay or Rio Janeiro, more information on the Tupinamba than any traveler or even missionary, who wrote on these Indians. He was naive, but his interest was wide and he had access to good informants. Thevet is our best source on the Tupinamba. In the COSMOGRAPHIE UNIVERSELLE (3:Thevet) are more detailed accounts than those which appear in this previous work. Thevet's style is heavy and confused.
