Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This article examines the social context of conceptual and
moral relativism in a Javanese village. More specifically, it explores links between
religious orientation and experiences in an ideologically plural setting. It argues that
cultural models of 'changing places' serves to guide a number of Javanese practices such as
child-borrowing, gender-switching, language use, and even religious conversion. These
models, formed in childhood experience, engender and express a relativism which is highly
valued in rural Java.
