Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This work is a sequel to the author's book, THE SHERPAS OF
NEPAL (1: Fürer-Haimendorf). The present source covers subjects not discussed in the
previous study, such as settlement patterns, the farming economy, trade, crafts, tourism,
and social and political change. Much emphasis here is on the effects of agriculture,
animal husbandry, and trade on the Sherpa economy. Chapter 3 provides some rather
interesting data on the employment of Sherpas as mountaineering and tourist guides by
foreign nationals. Several chapters deal with other non-Sherpa populations of Nepal and
have not been processed (chapters 5-7).
