Abstract
The author examines the resurgence of feasting and gift-giving among Kazak households in the post-Soviet era. She describes in particular one extravagant feast and explains the behavior in maintaining and extending household networks, and establishing social status and identity. She notes the rising conspicuous consumption of imported commodities and comments on the struggle of poorer households trying to keep up with costs of feasts.
