Abstract
This source is the journal of Captain James Cook of two months (April to July 1777) spent in the Kingdom of Tonga. Cook visited the islands ofNomuka, Lifuka, Tongatapu, and Eua. The journal covers topics such as dealings with the natives, trade, meeting Finau, Pau (the Tui Tonga), Maealiuaki (the Tui Kanokupolu), the performance of the Inasi ceremony, and other miscellaneous ethnographic notes. There is a summary of Tongan culture at the end. Journals of other members of the crew on the same visit will be found in 55:Anderson, 56:Samwell, and 57:Clerke.
