By: Hill, Polly.

Abstract
Using the theme of 'economic inequality' Hill analyzes '…the socio-economic affairs of a single village in Nigerian Hausaland.' (p. xi) The theme takes the form of an analytic framework in which Hill divides the population into economic groups, numbered 1-4, from rich to poor respectively. The economic groups have been indexed for 556. All of the data are analyzed in terms of this framework. The book is divided into two parts. The first part consists of 14 chapters which explore the theme of economic inequality in terms of the GANDU type of household organization, the extent of land holdings per farming unit, the means of acquisition and relinquishment of land, production, ownership of such things as granaries and domestic animals, the incidence and reasons for migration, and the prevalence of wage employment, whether for farming or craftwork.
