Abstract
This study examines the interrelationship between the local, natural and environmental conditions of a southwestern Taiwanese rural community and the mixed-cropping agricultural practices of its inhabitants. Chen documents and analyzes the process of economic and political transformation by which peasants increasingly produced less for subsistance purposes and more for the market. Chapter Six of this study includes a comparison between the village and two other villages about which information is included in this file (1: Gallin, 9: Diamond), and a hypothetical argument concerning the development of the local irrigation system.
