Abstract
This article treats fasting and similarly restrictive practices of the Island Carib. It examines both the form and occasion of each practice as a particular application of a general concept of the susceptibility of the individual to harmful forces and the avoidance of exposure to these forces by withdrawal. The author received formal training in anthropology and has published extensively on the Island Carib.
