Abstract
This study is primarily an exploration of the communication system as an instrument of social inquiry and it provides a detailed ethnographic examination of conflict management on the small island of Yanuyanu in the southern Lau group of Fiji. Focusing on the problem of conflict management in Lau society, Arno explores '…the linkage between everyday communication about conflict, through talk, and other forms of message exchange among individuals and groups, and large scale societal conflicts and the institutions that shape societal change…' (p.xix). In addition Arno combines ethnography and theory, developing in the process a theory of the relationship between conflict and communication that demands ethnography as a theoretical necessity.
