Abstract
This book is concerned with the use of kinship in the social structure of the Balinese, Indonesia. Based on analytical description of the operation of kinship symbolization in Balinese life, the authors propose that kinship should be best regarded as an integral part of more inclusive cultural patterns, not as an autonomous system. It provides the idioms through which the Balinese talk and understand their collective experience in a wide variety of social settings including the household, the community, the workplace, the temple, the market, the farm, the battlefields, the law of court, the playing field, and so on.
