Abstract
The information on which this monograph is based was gathered on the Mescalero Reservation by the author in the traditional anthropological style of participant observation aided in large part by data provided by her Mescalero informant Bernard Second. Much of the document deals with native concepts of cosmology, ethnoastronomy and the relationship between celestial phenomena and the environment, many aspects of which are integrated into the discussion of the girls' puberty ceremony held during the summer months and described in great detail in this work. The final section of this study presents a summary of Mescalero culture history from the sixteenth to the late twentieth centuries.
