Abstract
This dissertation is an epidemiological study of the effects of hydatid disease (Echinococcosis species) on the human and animal populations of California. The anthropological approach that is taken in this work is addressed to determining social and cultural factors which can affect the interaction between man and animals and these are considered in conjunction with other ecological variables. In addition to presenting detailed information on the life cycle of Echinococcosis species and its transmission from sheep to dogs to man, the author discusses various aspects of the sheep herding industry, Basque ethnoveterinary practices, immigration of the Basques from Europe to California, and a brief summary of their ethnography.
