Abstract
This dissertation describes the wide range of elements that make up the Sherpa pastoral system, stressing in particular animal management in Sagarmatha National Park in the context of Sherpa subsistence (i.e., in terms of patterns of land use, environmental impact, effectiveness of government regulation, and prospects for the future). The environment of Khumbu is discussed in great detail including information on the human role in modifying the natural landscape. Information is also presented on Sherpa history, society, economy, and changes that have taken place within the last few decades after contact with the outside world. This source presents in a clear and precise manner a comprehensive portrayal of conditions in Sagarmatha National Park as they existed ca. 1986.
